Fissure Sealants
The chewing surface of the molar teeth often have deep grooves and pits in them where food collects. To help prevent this food collection causing decay, we recommend painting these surfaces with fissures sealant, in children who are at higher risk of developing decay. These form a barrier to keep food and bacteria out.
It is a painless procedure that only takes a few minutes per tooth in the dental office.
The tooth is polished clean to remove any food and bacteria. We place a cotton roll beside the tooth to keep it dry. We place a blue etch to slightly roughen the surface for the sealant to adhere to, this gets washed off.
A white or pink liquid sealant is placed into the grooves and pits of the tooth surface and then set hard with a curing light for 20 seconds.

How Long Do Sealants Last?
Sealants will often last for several years before they need to be reapplied. During your regular dental visit, your dentist will check the condition of the sealant and can reapply them as needed.
Are Sealants Covered By Dental Insurance?
Some plans do cover sealants, so call your dental insurance company to find out what kind of coverage you have. The item code for fissure sealant is 161 per tooth.
